The Big Island of Hawaii is certainly that - with 8 climate zones, this one island contains sub-zones of the 5 major climate in the world! What does that mean for your travels there? You can do a 12-13 hour loop around the island, which we highly recommend, and experience wild shifts in weather as well as stunning changes in the terrain.
While the Kona side of the island looks like a moonscape covered in miles of black lava rock speckled with vibrant green resorts, the Hilo side is a tropical rainforest with drastically different flora. The island is comprised of 5 volcanos so head on up to check out the action and get a fresh facial from the steam escaping from the earth and then shower off by hiking nearby one of the many breathtaking waterfalls.
And this is only the land portion of the journey! Pop on those flippers and dip into the warm sea to swim alongside gorgeous aquatic life. From Wedgetail Triggerfish and Emperor Angelfish to Puffers and Moorish Idols, the seas are packed with bright companions. Of course everyone wants to spot the Green Sea Turtles and we certainly enjoyed them (from a distance of 20ft!) on land at the black sand beach of Punalu'u as well as swimming along side them in the open water.
There are numerous ways to experience this snorkeling haven - book a boat which includes an incredibly informative lesson (and a lovely lunch!) on all of the creatures and corals you'll see and have them take you out and explore the reefs further out. Or jump in from the shore to explore independently, while watching for important safety information listed at the beaches.
Certainly our most dramatic interaction came as we ventured out under cover of darkness. Donning a wet suit and climbing aboard for a 20 min ride out into the open sea under the stars is (almost) enjoyable enough but add in the end goal of swimming with the manta rays and you're making memories to last a lifetime. Ranging from 6-13 feet in diameter, these gentle giants will gravitate towards the light, or more accurately to the plankton attracted to the light, of the raft you're clinging to. As they spin and twirl in huge circles to collect their evening snack, they will come within inches of your mask, delighting you with their grace and fearlessness! We had a few screamers on our tour but apparently, the mantas enjoy the sound - it's a good thing!
You are also spoiled for choice with delicious dining and drinking options while on the big island. From poke bowls fresh from the sea, to malasadas fresh from the fryer, you can enjoy it all. There's a wealth of high end spots where you can book a fine table and gaze out over the setting sun as well as casual eateries where you can have dinner with your feet in the sand. Experience it all on your next trip to Hawaii's Big Island!
